Tribute to George Woods: Advocate, Mentor, and Diabetic Warrior

18. July 2024

“This was a great and good man who, for any number of reasons, could have let disease define his life. It didn’t define him and it didn’t confine him. If anything, he made a gift to the world. Here’s to George.” -Dr. David Armstrong, Founding president of ALPS

It is with profound sadness that we acknowledge the passing of George Woods, a remarkable advocate and inspiration to the diabetes community. George’s journey was a testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering spirit of a man who faced extraordinary challenges with grace and fortitude.

Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the early 2000s, George’s life took a dramatic turn due to complications from the disease, ultimately leading to the loss of both his legs. Despite this, he refused to let his circumstances define him. George’s story is one of incredible strength: from the initial struggles with his diagnosis to enduring multiple surgeries and the painful journey of recovery, he continually demonstrated an inspiring ability to adapt and overcome.

George was not only a patient but a fierce advocate for others living with diabetes. He became a motivational speaker, sharing his experiences and insights, making numerous appearances at our annual conference, DFCon. His words resonated deeply, offering hope and guidance to countless individuals facing similar battles. George’s ability to find purpose and joy, even in the face of adversity, was truly extraordinary. His commitment to spreading awareness about the importance of diabetic foot care and the need for vigilance in managing diabetes was unwavering. As his daughter, Dominique Woods, poignantly stated, “My dad loved ALPS and was grateful for every opportunity to learn and help others.”

Georgia Krehbiel, CEO of ALPS, remarked, “Throughout his journey, George not only battled his own health struggles but also dedicated himself to sharing his story and supporting fellow patients. His contributions to ALPS and DFCon were invaluable as he generously shared his experiences, provided encouragement, and offered hope to others facing similar challenges. His kindness, empathy, and contagious smile will be greatly missed.”

Beyond his advocacy, George was a beloved father, grandfather, and mentor. His dedication to his family and his community was evident in everything he did. He mentored students, sharing his story to motivate and inspire the next generation. His love for his grandchildren and his joy in teaching them his lifelong hobby of playing the spoons reflected his vibrant spirit and his ability to find happiness in the simple pleasures of life.

George’s legacy is one of courage and inspiration. He taught us the importance of perseverance, the value of seeking second opinions, and the necessity of being proactive in our health care. His life serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of severe challenges, we can find strength and purpose.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time. May George Woods rest in peace, and may his life’s work continue to inspire us all.

In George’s own words, “To everyone who is going through this [limb loss] it is mind over matter and you have to love yourself and say I can do my part.”
