14. August 2023

Moreno Valley, CA – Dr. David G. Armstrong, renowned Professor of Surgery at the University of Southern California, co-founder of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) and founding president of ALPS, delivered a grand rounds lecture to the Department of Surgery at Riverside University Health System Medical Center (RUHS). This marks the first time a podiatric surgeon has been invited to give grand rounds to the group, signifying a continued step forward in interdisciplinary collaboration.

The invitation was extended by Afshin Molkara, MD, vascular surgeon and chair of surgery at RUHS. Dr. Armstrong was introduced by the medical center’s co-chair of limb preservation, vascular surgeon Beatriz Leung, MD, who noted, “We are so privileged to have Dr. Armstrong here, who has literally written the book on developing these programs.”

Dr. Armstrong’s lecture focused on the critical importance of developing interdisciplinary programs in the USA and worldwide. Drawing from his extensive expertise, he provided insights into the “toe and flow” model, an innovative podiatric and vascular surgery approach that he developed. This model has guided the design of RUHS’s cutting-edge limb preservation program.

“It is an honor to contribute to the incredible work being done at Riverside University Health System Medical Center,” said Dr. Armstrong. “By sharing our collective experiences and insights, we can advance patient care and continue the quest to end preventable amputations within the next generation.”

Those in attendance were inspired by Dr. Armstrong’s visionary ideas and the potential for continued growth and collaboration across medical disciplines as well as practical, pragmatic, data-driven ways to develop programs.

The lecture serves as yet another testament to Dr. Armstrong’s commitment to fostering innovative interdisciplinary research, clinical practice, and advocacy in the field of limb preservation.
